In 2018, I conducted a study titled “African American Hair and Beauty: Examining Afrocentricity and Identity through the Reemergence and Expression of Natural Hair in the 21st Century." The study examines the expression of natural hair among Black women and how it is impacting the formation of Black womanhood and self-identity. I also analyzes the history behind the politics of Black hair within the United States and the significance behind the reemergence of natural hair in the present. Drawing connections to the Black Power and Black is Beautiful Movements in the 1960s, I hope to understand how the embracing of natural hair textures is collectively empowering women to find and assert the beauty within their blackness.
